Piste Hors updates

March 16, 2008

It's dumping!

Snowed 25 cm last night and cleared for a good part of the day today. Then it started snowing again this pm. 30-40 cm for tomorrow! I'll try to get some photos and vid but still too busy having fun. This week with Dan Egan and Ski Clinics

Winds coming out of west & n.west some slabs but seemed be holding pretty stable in espace killy today... but tomorrow things will be more unstable tomorrow with the new accumulations. we'll all be alert tomorrow for wind slabs and people cutting slopes above us

Still Great Sun & Snow

Still haven't had time to take photos and vids - having too much fun out there! You'll have to use your imagination! More snow starting on Saturday evening - snowing on and off all week at least until Thursday (Savoie & Haute Savoie).

Great snow, sun & lots of slab activity

No photos or vid today - too much good snow to ride in & not enough time! Mostly in Tignes today.

Lots of slab activity after avalanche control first thing in the morning on all aspects (even west where the wind came from) but especially northeast faces. Some natural avalanche activity too on the same aspects. AT least 3 accidental avalanches in the Espace Killy with no serious consequences.

Have Fun - Be Safe out there. It is awesome, but there are a few traps around if you're not paying attention

Today

It's started to snow. not too much yet, but skiing was good in places where the few cm's of fresh have blown into protected gullies & lee slopes. A lot more snow is forecast for the rest of the week!

Snow Report

We’ve had some GREAT snow in the last few days even if it has only been a very little bit. Last week I expressed myself in the following manner, “There are times when a guy will take anything he can get ….” What a difference a few cm’s make! Especially in the gullies and lee slopes where the wind has blown the snow, where accumulations have built up to a whopping 15 cm! The colder temps have helped too - making the snow feather light. We didn’t get all the snow that we were hoping for, but we can’t complain at all.

Snow Stability

The outlook for this coming week is for a bit more snow on Sunday-Wednesday.
For the snow stability: of course it has been very stable up until now. But predicting snow stability is all about looking at what we have now and at what could happen in the future. When we do get a good amount of snow we have to think about the layers of angular crystals, ‘frisette’, and depth hoar on flat and shaded slopes above 2200. These layers are not a problem now; but, with the next significant snowfalls (total 30 to 40cm or more in one place), they will be a source of instability under the new snow on shaded slopes that were not subjected to much skier compaction over the last few weeks. So that really means in places that were not ‘pisted off-piste’ and more on north-facing/shaded slopes that have not been skied very much - this weak cohesionless snow makes up the whole snowpack in some of these shaded north facing slopes.

Tip of the week: “The most important thing to remember while riding in fresh snow is to have a smile on your face!” (a quote from my friend Andreas from HAT & Alpine Experience). Let’s hope there will be something more to smile about soon.

Ridin' with Jimi Fish

Had some great turns on soft packed wind blown. We haven't had lots of new snow, but we're taking what we can get as I said in the last snow report. This snow was excellent in mostly narrow paths on the slopes that were protected from the wind. See these quick vids of HAT Team member 'Jimi Fish' in the Vallonet, Fornet Val d'Isere. Ride Hard !
